Can my children participate in outings?
The club caters primarily for adults. There are, however, some children who participate. Children's participation is considered on a case-by-case basis. More info at the permanence (see below).
I need equipment. Can I rent this at the club?
No, the club does not rent or sell equipment. And you will need your gear before you join an outing, since many of the ski resorts do not have convenient rental shops. Information on places to rent equipment in Geneva is available at the permanence (see below). Seasonal rentals are reasonably priced.
Can I sign up in advance? Can I reserve a place by telephone?
Registration and sign up is possible only at the permanence. If you can’t attend, ask a friend to stop by and sign up for you.
Can I pay by credit card?
Yes. There is an extra charge of ??? CHF, according to which card you pay with.
I’ve never put on a pair of skis in my life! Can a beginner join the club?
The club outings are suited for skiers of every level, from first-time beginners to experts. Lessons for first-time beginners start in December and usually run through to the end of February. If you start early in the season, you will be a good, confirmed skier before the season is over.
What resorts does the club visit?
The day trips usually visit ski resorts in the nearby French Alps such as Les Contamines, Flaine, Argentiere and Megeve, among others.
How much an outing cost?
The exact price depends on the destination. The coach transport costs CHF 28.-, a full-day lesson costs CHF 40.-, (for the Freeride classes CHF 50.-) and the ski lift ticket costs between CHF 30-45.- So a day of skiing will set you back about CHF 100.-
The weekend trips cost at least CHF 450.- (and include transport, lift pass, hotel, breakfast and dinner).
What is included?
The day trips are completely organized for you, they include round-trip coach transport, ski lift tickets and entire-day lessons given by Swiss-qualified instructors. Day trips depart from Geneva at Place des Nations at 7:30 in the morning, and return at about 18:30 the same day. The class groups usually take lunch together at a resort restaurant; this is not included in the price of the lesson.
What language is spoken?
Although lessons are provided in French, many instructors also speak English. The participants speak every language imaginable.
Can you tell me about weekend outings?
The weekend outings venture a bit farther from Geneva usually to resorts in the Swiss and French Alps. The schedule is set at the beginning of each year typically included are resorts such as Zermatt, Wengen, Zinal and Crans-Montana in Switzerland, and Val d’Isere and Les Deux Alpes in France. The weekend outings typically leave Geneva on a Friday evening and return on Sunday evening. There are no lessons given on the weekend outings. The weekend outings can sometimes take on a festive atmosphere.
Do you do anything other than skiing? How about boarding?
During the course of the season, the club also organises snowboard (surf) lessons, cross-country ski outings, off-piste helicopter skiing, ski touring and night ski , luge outings and snowshoes
I already a hot skier. I do not need lessons. What’s in it for me?
Join a lesson in class 6 or the Class Free Ride where you can jump off cliffs, learn how to do a heli, ski down through steep gulleys, float through waist-deep powder and perfect your high-speed ski technique. If you are already an expert skier and would like to become a Swiss-certified instructor, you can receive your instruction through the Club. If you are already certified and would like to teach, please let us know. Ask for Raffaele at the permanence (see below).
What happens if the weather is bad? Are outings ever cancelled?
Once the organizers make the decision on Thursday afternoon to organize an outing, they hardly ever cancel. If there is a big nasty storm front approaching, call the technical director Raffaele Moresino, 079-336 82 28 to find out the latest information. If an event is cancelled, participants will be refunded in full.
What is the refund policy?
If an outing is held and you do not show up only the ski pass will be refunded. You must understand that if you do not turn up, the SCIG has incurred expenses following reservations made on the basis of your inscription (transport, teachers...) which must be paid for.
Is ski training available during the summer season?
There is sometimes a ski outing during July or August. It goes to a very high resort, such as Tignes, where glacier skiing is available. More info at the permanence.
Can I sign up on the morning of the outing?
To register on the day of the outing, you should plan to arrive at the coach at Place des Nations at 0700. Ask to see Raffaele, who is the director of the alpine section of the club. If there is a free seat on the bus, and there is is a free spot in the appropriate lesson, he will accept your registration on the spot. If there is no free seat, you will be very disappointed.
If there is space, you will have to pay cash on the spot: the coach transport costs CHF 28.-, a full-day lesson will cost CHF 40.-, (for the Freeride classes CHF 50.-) and the ski lift ticket costs between CHF 30 & 55.- . You will also have to pay an extra fee of CHF 10.- for last-minute registration. If you are not a member you will have to pay an extra fee of CHF 15.- for adults and CHF 10.- for children as well. Please bring small bills.
Where can I find more information about the Ski Club?
Information and registration is available at the "permanence" (weekly meeting) of the club, held every Thursday from 18:00 to 19:30 at the restaurant of the Piscine de Varembé - Avenue Giuseppe-Motta 46 - 1202 Genève. This is just a short walk from Place des Nations (bus 5, 8, 11, 14, 18) see the map below. If you drop by, you will find an information table with people who can answer your questions, in both English and French.
I am only here for one month. Do I have to become a member?
No problem, non-members can participate in SCIG outings by paying a CHF 15.- for adults and CHF 10.- for children surcharge per outing.
